Les murs parlent

Los muros hablan (The Walls Speak) is a series of photographs taken between 2011 and 2013, showing the remains of erased graffiti made by activists (the Indignados) on the walls of banking and political institutions in Barcelona and Madrid during the 15-M protests. In the form of a transcription, this publication reproduces the slogans used by these movements as a succession of texts against the soundtrack of voices from the protests.

Like an archaeologist of the visible space, Anna Malagrida records traces of the conflict, writings that have been crossed out or erased on the surface-boundary of the wall which the anonymous participants turned into a space for material and symbolic questioning. Whilst the base of the walls at street level and their apparent monumental impassivity suggest an unequal struggle, Anna Malagrida photographed them when
they still retained the stubborn remains of the traces of writing.
The photographic act therefore becomes a gesture of resistance. By recording these gestures and recreating the original messages and voices, Los Muros hablan functions as an archive of a collective movement whose defining purpose is to question the very notion of representation. As the protest movement’s slogan says, “they don’t represent us, precisely because we are unrepresentable.”
