The Yellow vests movement emerged in France in October 2018. It gave rise to numerous demonstrations organised every Saturday across France, and particularly in Paris around the Étoile roundabout and the Boulevard des Champs-Élysées. Local residents and shopkeepers decided to install protective covers over shopfronts and residential windows. On Sundays, the day after the demonstrations, Anna Malagrida and Mathieu Pernot took photographs of the area and the protective measures that had been implemented.
The wooden planks, perfectly cut and arranged, produce a form of continuity with the classical architecture of these bourgeois neighbourhoods, whilst introducing a new social and political temporality. Through these installations, the façade becomes the visible site of a potential revolution. To the sound and fury of the crowds shown by the media, the authors contrast the moment after, that of emptiness, silence and the questioning of uncertain futures.
